Measles Information from Aneurin Bevan University Health Board

Vaccination rates in Powys are generally good, but as Measles is a highly infectious disease it is important as many people as possible are vaccinated.

Reminder to check your child's MMR status

Public Health Wales is urging parents and guardians to check their child’s MMR status. You can do this by:

  • Checking your Red Book if you have one

  • Contact your GP to check your MMR status

Here are some of the important reasons that children should have both doses of their MMR vaccination:

  • Two doses of the MMR vaccine provides lifelong protection and it’s never too late to catch up on missed doses. The first MMR dose given at 12–13 months of age and the second at 3 years and 4 months.

  • There is no specific treatment for measles. Treatment offered can only help alleviate symptoms.

  • Measles can be a very serious disease and cause severe, even life-threatening, complications.

  • The most common complications of measles include pneumonia, ear infection, diarrhoea and convulsions.

  • Complications are more common among children under 5 years of age.

  • Measles is highly infectious; one case of Measles can infect 9 out of 10 of unvaccinated close contacts.

  • The incubation period is around 10 days for Measles (range 7 to 21 days).

  • The infectious period begins just before the onset of symptoms, normally 3–4 days before the rash appears, and lasts up to 4 days after the onset of the rash.

  • 95% uptake of two doses of MMR is needed to prevent Measles outbreaks in our communities. In Wales currently 88.5% of children by aged five have had both MMR doses.

Symptoms to look for: cold like symptoms including runny eyes and a high temperature. A rash, this normally develops after 3-4 days of the cold like symptoms starting and tends to start to appear around the hairline first.

Fel y gwyddoch mae Bwrdd Iechyd Prifysgol Aneurin Bevan wedi datgan achos o'r frech goch yn ddiweddar. Maen nhw wedi gofyn i Ysgol Calon Cymru rannu’r wybodaeth ganlynol gyda’n rhieni a gofalwyr.

Gwybodaeth am y Frech Goch gan Fwrdd Iechyd Prifysgol Aneurin Bevan

Mae cyfraddau brechu ym Mhowys yn dda ar y cyfan, ond gan fod y frech goch yn glefyd heintus iawn mae'n bwysig bod cymaint o bobl â phosibl yn cael eu brechu.

Nodyn atgoffa i wirio statws MMR eich plentyn

Mae Iechyd Cyhoeddus Cymru yn annog rhieni a gwarcheidwaid i wirio statws MMR eu plentyn. Gallwch wneud hyn drwy:

  • Gwiriwch eich llyfr coch os oes gennych un

  • Cysylltwch â'ch meddyg teulu i wirio eich statws MMR

Dyma rai o'r rhesymau pwysig pam y dylai plant gael y ddau ddos o'u brechiad MMR:

  • Mae dau ddos o'r brechlyn MMR yn rhoi amddiffyniad am oes ac nid yw byth yn rhy hwyr i ddal i fyny â dosau a gollwyd. Rhoddir y dos MMR cyntaf pan fydd plentyn yn 12–13 mis oed a'r ail pan fydd yn 3 oed a 4 mis

  • Nid oes triniaeth benodol ar gyfer y frech goch. Gall y driniaeth a gynigir helpu i leddfu symptomau yn unig.

  • Gall y frech goch fod yn afiechyd difrifol iawn ac achosi cymhlethdodau mawr a all beryglu bywyd hyd yn oed.

  • Mae cymhlethdodau mwyaf cyffredin y frech goch yn cynnwys niwmonia, haint ar y glust, dolur rhydd a chonfylsiynau.

  • Mae cymhlethdodau yn fwy cyffredin ymhlith plant o dan 5 oed.

  • Mae'r frech goch yn hynod heintus; gall un achos o'r Frech Goch heintio 9 o bob 10 o gysylltiadau agos heb eu brechu.

  • Y cyfnod magu yw tua 10 diwrnod ar gyfer y Frech Goch (ystod o 7 i 21 diwrnod).

  • Mae'r cyfnod heintus yn dechrau ychydig cyn i'r symptomau ddechrau, fel arfer 3-4 diwrnod cyn i'r frech ymddangos, ac mae'n para hyd at 4 diwrnod ar ôl dechrau'r frech.

  • Mae angen cymryd 95% o ddau ddos o MMR i atal achosion o'r frech goch yn ein cymunedau. Yng Nghymru ar hyn o bryd mae 88.5% o blant erbyn pump oed wedi cael y ddau ddos MMR.

Symptomau i chwilio amdanynt: symptomau oer, gan gynnwys llygaid sy'n rhedeg a thymheredd uchel. Fel arfer, mae brech yn datblygu ar ôl 3-4 diwrnod o'r symptomau tebyg i annwyd yn dechrau ac yn tueddu i ddechrau ymddangos o amgylch yr hairline yn gyntaf.
