In general, the governing body should carry out its functions with the aim of taking a broadly strategic role in the running of the school. These might include: 

  • Setting aims and objectives for the school

  • Adopting policies for achieving those aims and objectives

  • Setting targets for achieving those aims and objectives

  • Reviewing progress towards achieving the aims and objectives.

Governing bodies have a range of duties and powers in legislation: 

  • Conducting the school with a view to promoting high standards of educational achievement and behaviour

  • Setting appropriate school targets for pupil achievement at Key Stage 2, 3 and 4

  • Taking general responsibility for the conduct of the school – in practice this means policy making and how, in broad strategic terms, the school should be run

  • Managing the school's budget, including determining the staff complement and making decisions on staff pay in accordance with the School Teachers’ Pay and Conditions Document (STPCD)

  • Making sure that the curriculum for the school is balanced and broadly based and in particular that the National Curriculum and religious education are taught

  • Providing parents with a report every year which includes information about National Curriculum assessments and examination results

  • Appointing the head teacher and deputy head teacher (with advice from the LA and, in the case of voluntary aided and voluntary controlled schools the Diocese) and other staff and regulating staff conduct and discipline

  • Drawing up an action plan following an Estyn inspection

Yn gyffredinol, dylai’r corff llywodraethu gyflawni ei swyddogaethau gyda’r nod o gymryd rôl strategol yn fras wrth redeg yr ysgol. Gallai’r rhain gynnwys:

  • Gosod nodau ac amcanion ar gyfer yr ysgol

  • Mabwysiadu polisïau ar gyfer cyflawni’r nodau a’r amcanion hynny

  • Gosod targedau ar gyfer cyflawni'r nodau a'r amcanion hynny

  • Adolygu cynnydd tuag at gyflawni'r nodau a'r amcanion.

Mae gan gyrff llywodraethu amrywiaeth o ddyletswyddau a phwerau mewn deddfwriaeth:

  • Cynnal yr ysgol gyda golwg ar hybu safonau uchel o gyflawniad addysgol ac ymddygiad

  • Gosod targedau ysgol priodol ar gyfer cyflawniad disgyblion yng Nghyfnodau Allweddol 2, 3 a 4

  • Cymryd cyfrifoldeb cyffredinol am ymddygiad yr ysgol – yn ymarferol mae hyn yn golygu llunio polisi a sut, mewn termau strategol eang, y dylid rhedeg yr ysgol

  • Rheoli cyllideb yr ysgol, gan gynnwys pennu nifer y staff a gwneud penderfyniadau ar gyflogau staff yn unol â’r Ddogfen Cyflog ac Amodau Athrawon Ysgol (STPCD)

  • Sicrhau bod y cwricwlwm ar gyfer yr ysgol yn gytbwys ac yn eang ac yn arbennig bod y Cwricwlwm Cenedlaethol ac addysg grefyddol yn cael eu haddysgu

  • Darparu adroddiad i rieni bob blwyddyn sy’n cynnwys gwybodaeth am asesiadau’r Cwricwlwm Cenedlaethol a chanlyniadau arholiadau

  • Penodi’r pennaeth a’r dirprwy bennaeth (gyda chyngor gan yr ALl ac, yn achos ysgolion gwirfoddol a gynorthwyir ac ysgolion gwirfoddol a reolir, yr Esgobaeth) a staff eraill a rheoleiddio ymddygiad a disgyblaeth staff

  • Llunio cynllun gweithredu yn dilyn arolygiad Estyn
