LGBTQ+: What Does it Mean?
There’s a lot of new and sometimes confusing language used by people talking about being LGBTQ+. It can be difficult to understand what people mean – which can also make it difficult to explain what you’re feeling inside.
‘LGBTQ+’ is an initialism that means ‘Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender and Queer’. The plus sign (+) on the end represents other sexual orientations and gender identities. Below are some helpful definitions of those words, and some frequently-asked questions.
You can also find detailed explanations of lots of other terms you might have heard on the main Stonewall website: www.stonewall.org.uk/help-advice/glossary-terms
Lesbian
A woman (or girl) attracted to other women (or girls).
Gay
A person who is attracted to someone of the same gender (can be used about men or women).
Bisexual
A person who is attracted to more than one gender.
Transgender
A person whose gender identity doesn't match the sex they were assigned at birth.
Queer
People use this word as a way to identify with and celebrate people of all gender identities and all the ways people love each other. However, when used as an insult it is a word that hurts.
Why is there a plus sign (+) on the end?
The + represents other sexual orientations and gender identities. There are lots more! Other ways people identity include those who aren't attracted to anyone, and those who don't identify as male or female. If you're interested, you can find out more online.
What's an ally?
A friend and supporter of the LGBTQ+ community. You don't have to be LGBTQ+ to be an ally.
What if I get it wrong?
Don't worry! Everyone gets it wrong from time to time. Correct yourself if you can, and move on – your intentions were good.
Pride Flags
To learn more about these LGBTQ+ terms, and to see the Pride flags associated with them, download the PDF presentation below:
LGBTQ+: Beth yw ei ystyr?
Mae pobl yn defnyddio llawer o iaith newydd sydd weithiau’n ddryslyd wrth siarad am fod yn LGBTQ+. Gall fod yn anodd deall beth a olyga pobl – sydd hefyd yn ei gwneud yn anodd i esbonio sut rydych yn teimlo tu fewn.
Llythrenw yw ‘LGBTQ+’ sy’n golygu ‘Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender a Queer’ – Lesbiad, Hoyw, Deurywiol, Trawsryweddol a Chyfunrywiol . Mae’r arwydd plws (+) ar y diwedd yn cynrychioli cyfeiriadedd rhyweddol a hunaniaethau rhywedd eraill. Isod ceir rhai diffiniadau defnyddiol o’r geiriau hynny, a rhai cwestiynau cyffredin.
Gallwch hefyd gael llawer o esboniadau manwl o dermau eraill rydych wedi eu clywed efallai ar brif wefan Stonewall: www.stonewall.org.uk/help-advice/glossary-terms
Lesbiad
Menyw (neu ferch) sy’n cael ei denu at fenywod (neu ferched) eraill.
Hoyw
Person sy’n cael ei ddenu at rhywun o’r un rhyw (gellir ei ddefnyddio ar gyfer dynion a menywod).
Deurywiol
Person sy’n cael ei ddenu at fwy nag un rhyw.
Trawsryweddol
Person nad yw ei rywedd yn cyd-fynd â’r rhyw y ganwyd hwy iddo.
Cyfunrhywiol
Mae pobl yn defnyddio’r gair hwn fel modd i uniaethu â, a dathlu, pobl o bob hunaniaeth rhywedd a’r holl ffyrdd y mae pobl yn caru ei gilydd. Ond, o’i ddefnyddio fel sarhad, mae’n air sy’n brifo.
Pam y ceir arwydd plws (+) ar y diwedd?
Mae’r + yn cynrychioli cyfeiriadeddau rhywiol a hunaniaethau rhywedd eraill. Mae yna llawer mwy! Ffyrdd eraill y mae pobl yn uniaethu yw’r rheiny nad ydynt yn cael eu denu at neb, a’r rheiny nad ydynt yn uniaethu â gwrywod na benywod. Os oes gennych ddiddordeb, gallwch ffeindio mwy ar-lein.
Beth yw cynghreiriad?
Ffrind neu gefnogwr o’r gymuned LGBTQ+. Doed dim rhaid i chi fod yn LGBTQ+ i fod yn ffrind.
Beth os gaf pethau’n anghywir?
Peidiwch â phoeni! Mae pawb yn ei gael yn anghywir weithiau. Cywirwch eich hun os medrwch, ac ewch ymlaen – roedd gennych fwriadau da.

LGBTQ+ Calendar
Every year during the month of June, the LGBTQ+ community celebrates in a number of different ways. Across the world, Pride events are held as a way of recognising the influence LGBTQ+ people have had around the world. The month of June was chosen as Pride month because the Stonewall Riots took place during June 1969. The Stonewall Riots were a very important milestone for the LGBTQ+ community, and are seen as the start of the Gay Rights Movement.
Calendr LGBTQ+
Bob blwyddyn yn ystod mis Mehefin, mae’r gymuned LGBTQ+ yn dathlu mewn nifer o ffyrdd gwahanol. Ledled y byd, cynhelir diwyddiadau Pride fel modd o gydnabod y dylanwad gafodd pobl LGBTQ+ o gwmpas y byd. Dewiswyd mis Mehefin fel mis Pride am fod Terfysgoedd Stonewall wedi digwydd yn ystod Mehefin 1969. Roedd Terfysgoedd Stonewall yn garreg filltir bwysig iawn i’r gymuned LGBTQ+, ac i’w gweld fel dechrau’r Mudiad Hawliau Hoyw.
Parades are a prominent feature of Pride month, and there are many street parties, community events, poetry readings, public speaking, street festivals and educational sessions that attract millions of participants. As well as being a month-long celebration, Pride month is also an opportunity to peacefully protest and raise political awareness of current issues facing the community.
Although Pride month is the most famous, events to support and spread awareness of LGBTQ+ issues happen throughout the year. Visit www.justlikeus.org/home/get-involved to see what other events you can get involved in.
Mae gorymdeithiau’n nodwedd amlwg o fis Pride, a cheir llawer o bartïon stryd, digwyddiadau cymunedol, darlleniadau barddoniaeth, siarad cyhoeddus, gwyliau stryd a sesiynau addysgol sy’n denu miliynau o gyfranogwyr. Yn ogystal â bod yn ddathliad am fis cyfan, mae mis Pride hefyd yn gyfle i brotestio’n heddychlon a chodi ymwybyddiaeth gwleidyddol o faterion cyfredol sy’n wynebu’r gymuned.
Er mai mis Pride yw’r enwocaf, mae digwyddiadau i gefnogi a lledaenu ymwybyddiaeth am faterion LGBTQ+ yn digwydd drwy’r flwyddyn. Ewch i www.justlikeus.org/home/get-involved i weld pa ddigwyddiadau eraill y gallwch gymryd rhan ynddynt.
